One Project Instead of Five

Plenty of homeowners renovate a room at a time over several years. It works, but each round brings fresh dust, another contractor and finishes that never quite match.

Doing it all at once lets the layout, the systems and the finishes get planned together. Structural changes and rough-in work happen while everything is open, and paint, trim and doors are chosen once for the whole house.

What Usually Goes Into It

  • Layout changes

Removing or moving walls to open the kitchen, widen a hallway or rework bedrooms, with any load-bearing wall checked and properly supported before it comes out.

  • Kitchen and baths

The rooms that take the most coordination: cabinets, counters, tile and fixtures, sequenced so the house keeps one working bathroom whenever the layout allows.

  • Systems while walls are open

Supply lines, drains and circuits updated for the new layout while the framing is exposed, so nothing has to be cut open and patched again later.

  • Matching finishes throughout

Drywall, trim, doors and paint chosen for the whole house at once, so rooms on opposite ends end up looking like they belong together.

Decide These Early

  1. Stay or move out

Living at home is possible with phasing, but it stretches the schedule. A short stay elsewhere during the heaviest weeks can shorten the overall job.

  2. What to keep

Cabinets, doors, fixtures or trim worth saving should be identified before demolition, so they are protected and reused rather than hauled away.

  3. Rooms that must keep working

If you stay, decide which spaces have to work throughout, such as one bathroom and a spot to cook, and the sequence is built around them.

Before a Full Renovation

How many months does a full renovation usually run?

Several, in most cases. Leaving the floor plan alone makes it quicker; moving walls, drains and circuits adds time. Materials that take weeks to arrive have to be ordered early so crews are not left idle, and your written schedule shows each stage.

Does a renovation this size need permits?

In most cases, yes. Moving walls or adding circuits and plumbing generally requires a permit. We let you know which pieces of your project call for one, and every stage is built to pass its inspection.
